New Update Written Battle Report! Old Dominion Legions Vs. Yoroni

Oooooo baby it’s update time! And I gotta say. PBG did GREAT with this one.

Monday is our day to play conquest at the FLGS and so we got to playin’ Conquest! Luckily the apps had updated and we were able to play with the new Post Adepticon Update! Ty and I threw down a game on the scenario Forlorn hope. He had Yoroni and I had a Mounted Strategos Legions list.

I will share more things about it later, but I think this update is one of the best I’ve seen across all the wargames I’ve played. The nerfs were well done, the rework of OD is extremely compelling and exciting, and the changes to the other factions felt really exciting.

Ty was trying out putting Tengu in big blocks to see how the extra movement felt. I was trying out just…Legions. Using the Mounted Strategos supremacy and mowing down the living.

Early Game

Pretty normal early game from the two sides, Ty brings in his two extra thicc Modular Regiments on both sides of the board. I bring in my two spellcasters to be able to touch my zones next round, and I place my first Prodromoi onto the left zone to start scoring.

Ty Continues to deploy equally between the sides and we are scoring a similar amount of points each round, my Prodromoi obliterate the Domaru Damashi and in turn get atomized by the Daimyo Kami Block. I notice at this point that the Oni bricks are going to kill anything they touch, and I use this to my advantage, I have way more cards and I know that if he kills the front regiment, I will be able to charge with one of the back regiments.

Mid Game

Round four I use my supremacy and the power of Varangian Guard to just Obliterate the first big block. Like it wasn’t even close, they just melted them. I love Varangian Guard so much. But then the middle and left side become just a huge tangle. I don’t love how I deployed here and I really needed to spread things out a bit more. Ty has gotten one objective kill and has tied me for two points of damage on the second.

Sadly Ty wins the roll to go first (As he should he had way less cards) and get’s to kill another objective. He is ahead around 7-9 points or something like that. I need to start pushing through this jail.

Then… things. go. poof. Athanatoi finally kill the Yokai and my Kataphraktoi just start melting the Tengu’s on the charge. Sadly the Brittle rule comes into play here and I take a lot of damage, I’ve been trying to avoid it but it’s such a weird melee scrum right now it’s impossible. It is nice to feel like Yoroni can die though!

Late Game

Well, I finally push through! The damage was too much and I was starting to overwhelm the Demons.

Sadly it’s now the hyper late game and I do not have enough time to catch up on points. This round I made a key error, my thought was, there is only 10 wounds left on that Oni block. Pretty trivial for a charge clash from my Kata’s, so I charged and killed the Tengu and reformed to hopefully get the supremacy win next round and from there take the game!

Looking back a bit safer play would’ve been to charge and kill the tengu, then march forward to the very tippy top of the zone.

Sadly Ty wins the roll off and my poor Kata’s die horrifically to the Glorious Charge

We talk it out from here as my kids are getting tired and the writing is on the wall. Spider kills my Athanatoi and then dies real good to the Varagian. We each reform to spread across two zones and Ty wins by about 10 points after staring at each other Menacingly for two rounds.

Final Thoughts

Dang, a super close game! I had two key thoughts afterwards when talking with Ty, I deployed too centrally. Especially with my speedy Cavalry. Should’ve just really spread out wide and overwhelmed him. Also. I should’ve marched the Katas at the end game. If your plan revolves around having to win Supremacy next turn…maybe think of a different plan is what I learned today 😀

Here’s the thing. Other people have already done write ups and they’re amazing. I’ll give quick thoughts, But if you want, go ahead and peek at my two personal favorites https://www.goonhammer.com/conquest-march-update-review-meta-predictions/ from Rob and https://bravehumanswithsticks.blogspot.com/2026/03/the-great-upheaval-in-march-conquest.html?m=1 from Hanna for fantastic write ups about the whole game post update.

Old Dominion was already one of the coolest most interesting undead factions in all wargaming. I loved the dark power mechanic and it has been updated and modernized in such a fantastic way. Brittle was done masterfully and doesn’t feel too oppressive but it makes you really actually have to play the game. The warlord traits have been updated and all of them are compelling! Some even drastically change how the faction wants to function. These are absolutely templates of how a Conquest faction should work. Wide variety of builds. An appropriate power level. And fluffy, fun, balancing factors. I am very impressed with this and can’t wait to dive into more lists. Namely some Fallen Divinity. Some Theokrator. Some Xhiliarch. Archimandrite AoD nonsense. I dunno. All of it is amazing.

Spires and City States received some mild updates. Nothing too drastic but it is nice to know that CS and WC have major sized revamps coming. I cannot wait to get my creepy alien wood elves on the table! And if the Old Dominion update is anything to go by I am going to love what they do to my Technogreeks.

And lastly my beloved Sorcerer Kings. I think everything they did was well done and very deserved. Homing winds was oppressive. Trinvartas were oppressive. SK still feels very strong still and I think they made Initiates a little too insane. Don’t go buy 15 stands of Mahabarahti Initiates but be prepared for their nonsense. I’m sure it’ll get toned down.

Anyway! Thanks again for reading! I’ll keep pumping out Old Dominion reports for the next little while as I dive into a variety of list styles when I get the chance. After that, it’s time for Spires and Weavers! Until next time!
