The Munitorum Field Manual is here, and as pretty much everyone predicted, Space Wolves got hit really hard with point increases.

Bjorn went up 10, Logan on foot went up 15, Thunderwolf Cavalry went up an additional 20 points per 6, and in the Codex side of things, Jump Pack Intercessors went up 10 points for 5 to a total of 90.
In good news, they also fixed Champions of Russ to function the way that most people have been playing it, which is fantastic. Here’s the FAQ for anyone curious.

This is a great change that makes me extremely excited to start messing with Champs again, and I’ve got a build or two that I’m thinking about taking to Worlds.
On the Stormlance front, things are business as usual, except that the enhancement for coming in turn 1 from reserves also went up 15 points to 25, which is honestly where I would have expected that enhancement to be from day 1.
The list that I took to my last GT went from 1990 points to 2170 points, so it’s time to start cutting things and talking about the future.
Stormlance: Thunderwolves Are Still King

Thunderwolves are now (maybe) appropriately costed, and they’re still the best thing in the faction. Frankly, as they’re the models that I wanted to play when I started playing Warhammer 2 years ago (and barely ended up going with Chaos Knights instead), I am fine with this.
If playing Stormlance, I think you still play 3 max units with characters, although putting Logan on his sled is a bit of a no-brainer now. It used to be a net savings of 20 points, now it’s a net savings of 35 and that’s a significant enough jump that I think there are no defendable reasons to leave him on foot unless you are insanely flush with points.
I think most lists should be looking for things to cut outside the Thunderwolves in order to make the points back up. Let’s have a look at the list I played most recently and talk about what I’m thinking as the evolution.
Old Stormlance Build
Logan Grimnar on Foot (Warlord)
Bjorn, the Fellhanded
Lieutenant w/ Combi-Weapon
Thunderwolf Cavalry x6 w/ Storm Shields
– Battle Leader w/ Power Fist
– Wolf Lord w/ Power Fist
— Arrive from reserves a turn early enhancement
Thunderwolf Cavalry x6 w/ Storm Shields
– Battle Leader w/ Power Fist
– Wolf Lord w/ Power Fist
Thunderwolf Cavalry x6 w/ Storm Shields
– Battle Leader w/ Power Fist
– Wolf Lord w/ Power Fist
Jump Pack Assault Intercessors x5 w/ Power Fist Sergeant
Jump Pack Assault Intercessors x5 w/ Power Fist Sergeant
Scouts
Scouts
Infiltrators
Callidus Assassin
This is currently over by 170 points, and I think that it could stay relatively close to the current build by dropping the Callidus and Lieutenant with Combi-Weapon and calling it good. That said, I believe the list would be a little light on scoring elements if that were to happen, and my current thinking is now something like this.

Out: Callidus, Lieutenant w/ Combi-Weapon, Jump Pack Intercessors x1, Wolf Lord on Thunderwolf
Change: Logan on foot to Logan on Sled
In: Scouts, Inquisitorial Agents
The net result of this is that we’ve lost one scoring unit (Logan going to sled is not happy for scenario), and our scoring units are decidedly less good.
That said, our scoring units are fine (we can keep one unit of Scouts safe while jailing with the other two) and most of the secondaries can be scored with units coming on from reserves while the Thunderwolves keep things engaged and tied up.
How would this list have performed at my last GT? I think I would have won every game with a very similar score, I might have had one less perfect score game. The list still pressures people out of primary, does secondaries perfectly competently, and with the inclusion of Logan on the Storm Sled is better into the mirror than it would have been without him.
How does it perform into the broader metagame? I’m not sure. Thousand Sons – the worst matchup for the list I believe – got points hikes but in much the same way we’re going to trim things to make our best thing still work, so will they.
I have some thoughts about Phobos Librarian with Hounds of Morkai, but they’re expensive and situational outside of the Thousand Sons and Grey Knights matchup.
Sisters of Battle got a little less killy, dropping at least one tank to make their points work, and that’s certainly relevant for us.
Orks might be on the rise again, and that’s a matchup that Stormlance isn’t particularly happy about against a good player.
Death Guard is still a bad matchup I suspect, but I don’t know how to change that and still play Stormlance, Champs has a better time with the stinky boys.
Here is another Stormlance build I think might have legs.

This list drops Bjorn (boo) and a Wolf Lord to fit in double Vindicators and the bare minimum of scenario pieces. This is a style of list I’ve not yet played, because I don’t have Vindicators (yet – they’re on the way), but I’ve played against it and it’s pretty brutal. This list is going to focus on killing everything in the way in addition to denying primary and then spending the last round or two scoring a bunch of secondaries and hoping to score in the mid 80s range for points.
I plan on getting at least one game with this on the table in the next couple of weeks.
Champions of Russ: It’s Alive!

I really, really like Champions of Russ, and I played it at the Tacoma Open where I won best overall with a very silly list playing Canis Rex.
Their FAQ clarifying that the stratagems involved function as we were playing them makes me very happy.
Thunderwolves are still the best units in this detachment, by nature of being very hard hitting and having excellent characters with which to accomplish Sagas, but I don’t think putting three in a list where only one can advance or fall back and charge is the best here.
Other excellent things to consider for Champs include:
Ragnar – This guy is a hard hitting (understatement) character that can accomplish a lot of the sagas on his own with an Epic Challenge stratagem while attached to a unit of Assault Intercessors. He kills most tanks on his own with the Go for the Throat, kills most Characters on his own regardless of Go for the Throat or not, and presents a potent Heroic Intervention threat as well as he gets the bonus attacks and strength on any charge move.
Judiciar w/ Black Death – This character has innate precision and devastating wounds, which makes him perfect for hunting down both characters and vehicles. I like putting him on Bladeguard Veterans as a bunch of fights first guys with him are a powerful Heroic Intervention threat that is also fairly resilient to shooting.

Wulfen – these models with sustained and lethal hits against an oaths target do a disgusting amount of damage, especially with Go for the Throat. A ten man unit makes 40 attacks, rolling 6 sixes into 6 sixes with the rerolls, hitting a total of 36 ish times with 12 lethals, wounding anything in the game on 5s at worst for a total of 24 wounds at AP -2. should kill a big knight, Mortarion, Magnus, a Land Raider, etc. Their downside is they cannot perform actions and that means they require a whole suite of support units to do them instead. They’re also fairly durable at t5 with a 4++/6+++ and 4+ fight on death.
Land Raider Redeemer – I like this model a lot with Ragnar/Assaults and Judiciar/Black Death/Bladeguard Veterans. It’s also tall enough to block true line of sight to the Thunderwolves unless you’ve modeled your Thunderwolves really strangely, which can be very powerful on some terrain layouts.

One other thing that I have not yet tried myself but that I am intrigued by is max Wolfguard Terminators with shields led by Arjac Rockfist and a Terminator Captain, or alternatively just by a Terminator Chaplain. I think that could be extremely interesting into some metas, but I haven’t had the time to test it myself, and I probably won’t be doing so in the next month or so.
With all that said, here are a couple of builds I’m tossing around:

This is a blunt hammer of a list. It kills things insanely efficiently, it’s relatively tough to shift off the line, and it has just enough scoring elements to make it work. It’s worth noting that Champions isn’t going to be playing true “jail” like Stormlance is, and it’s more designed to be a counterpunch or a waiting game kind of list. This list has two waves usually, with the Wulfen leading the charge and the Thunderwolves sneaking around the edges blowing things up.
On the other hand, something a little more elegant:

The variant of this that’s probably even stronger is dropping Black Death off the Judiciar, changing the Wolf Lord to Harald Deathwolf, putting the Black Death on the Battle Leader with Harald, and putting Frost Weapon on the other Battle Leader.
In any case, this is a list with a bunch of unusual things for a Thunderwolf spam list, and I’ve played it (or something very similar) a number of times now and really liked it. The Scouts here are almost entirely used to deny the enemy list scout moves with their own models, and not so much to jail things, and you need to preserve them to score secondaries more often than not.
That said, this is going to kill things fast, and you will often end up containing or sabotaging with Ragnar or the Judiciar unit or even the Land Raider.
I like this build quite a lot into Orks and Blood Angels, because the BGV/Judiciar and the Flamers on the Redeemer are both extremely good into both matchups to my eye. Champs is also just better into Thousand Sons in general by nature of getting ANY feel no pain, and that’s very interesting as well.
Conclusion: You Can’t Keep a Good Dog Down

My initial reaction to the gigantic point increases was dismay. Then I did some tinkering and it’s turned into some significant optimism.
I don’t think Thunderwolf Spam has gotten appreciably worse compared to the rest of the game, and might have gotten better. Our ability to cancel primary and the nerf to secret missions (you can’t score primary turn 5 if you’re doing one) means that we can continue to “jail” people, the nerf to bloodsurge hurt other factions much worse than it hurt us, and while we are losing some scoring units we aren’t losing many scoring units while still retaining the hardest hitting, fastest unit on 4 legs in the game intact.
All this together means that, in my opinion, Space Wolves are still going to play one of if not the best lists in the game as our plans haven’t changed hardly at all, and the game around us has shifted to make it easier for our primary game plan to function at the highest level.
In any case, thank you very much for reading, and we’ll see you in the next one.

Thanks for the article !
Always intereseted in your russ list since US Open, and that two game on Wargame Lives was great.
Talk about point squeezes I think suppressor maybe an alternative choices for JPIs? They got down to 75 per 3 with same 12″ move and Deep Strike may be it can be an viable option?
I am actually quite interested in suppressors, but I’m NOT interested in paying $120 for three random jump marines since apparently they’re unpurchaseable from GW? I think they’re definitely something to consider moving forward.
I need to know more about that space wolf color scheme. Speed paints?
Unfortunately not, if you poke around the hobby section there’s a ‘how to’ article.
